Hayden Data is proud to announce its first system installation with our new, high-accuracy ultrasonic anemometer, a crucial step in our development of the industry’s most advanced and unique technology for dynamic line rating (DLR) of high-voltage transmission lines. In this specific case, the installation took place alongside a 230 kV line of a mid-Atlantic transmission utility.
The ultrasonic anemometer allows our customers to measure wind speed at an unprecedented accuracy of +/- 0.1 m/s, even at low speeds between 0 and 10 m/s, which is where the cooling effect of the wind has its most pronounced positive impact on the change of transmission capacity of HV overhead lines. The overall measuring range of the sensor is 0 to 112 mph, or 0 to 180 km/h.
Why it matters? Power utilities around the world have little to no possibilities to measure key environmental factors such as ambient temperature and wind at high granularity along power lines to help them dynamically rate their lines, increase transmission capacity and reduce grid congestion, and improve the integration of renewable energy. Weather stations from national weather services are typically spread out thinly and the respective data does not take into account local terrain characteristics and micro climates. With Hayden Data, power utilities can measure and monitor the relevant data for DLR exactly where it matters: alongside their power lines, where micro climates and the effects of terrain topology are taken into account. And without the need for power or communications in the field, even in remote areas without cellular coverage.
